The cost of a wireless printer

Wireless is everywhere including new printers but that shouldn't mean you should go out of your way to use this. Sure, if this printer is going to end up in a closet some place then it makes sense, but most often it is going to be sitting on a desk right next to your computer which means it could still be plugged in via the USB connection.
When you are dealing with technology, keeping it simple is still the best method and even though that may mean connecting to your wireless network and you are done, but if you are not technically apt and end up requiring tech support. As I posted about this exact issue back in 2010, the only difference is that more printers are going to have the wireless option. Be aware, when you add more tech, there is more chance of problems and when there are problems you may require tech support and if that means paying $$ then the over all cost of that very inexpensive wireless printer may have just gone up substantially!

To Forward (email) or Not to Forward?

An issue I dealt with today was one that I basically had created a number of years ago when I setup a client to a gmail account and since they still wanted to use their internet provider's free email address, if for no other reason then to be able to gradually move all of your contacts over to your gmail account by a kind reminder they are still sending email to your old email address. Unlike the problem you will have, should you change internet provider and your email account is immediately terminated.. yes, this is what will happen unless you continue to pay that internet provider at the very least, a holiday account activation fee which basically keeps your email account active when you are on extended vacation and have turned off your cable (for example).. but when I set it up, even though you can have gmail retrieve email from that POP account, I had turned on the internet provider's email forwarding feature which was redirecting the mail to gmail anyway. Technically speaking this assures that you are going to get the mail without having it fill up the mailbox, should you not check it within a specific amount of time, but also created a problem when I had also set it up to automatically retrieve the mail and it was having troubles due to the password being changed. But because we couldn't remember the password and in order for the email recovery to work, it would email to that account. Lucky for me that I had the "hard" forward on because we still wouldn't have been able to recover the mail because we had forgotten that email password. Confused? Well the fact that he had forgotten the email password, you can log in to your account and then reset the password. If you forget that password to access your account then you will have to contact the internet provider either through a lengthy phone call or automated means which typically ask for your account number from your bill you get in the mail which may have a pin number on it, or by reading the very long serial number on the bottom of your internet modem along with other security questions you may have set up. In this case because he had remembered the account access information we could then get to the email part where I then noticed the "hard" forward I had set up all those years back.
So which way is right? The fact that is actually helped us recover the password was ok, but the fact it would have been unnecessary if I had not had the hard forward on and simply used the POP method, which I had done as well so in this case it was redundant because there was really never anything in the account for Google to pick up since it was always being forwarded to the gmail account in the first place.
To answer it, I would have to ask a few questions, like which is faster, more reliable, safer? One method, the hard forward, works as a push method, whereas the mail that comes in is immediately sent to gmail whereas the account retrieval method is done on a time basis, I think every 5 minutes but it might be a little less. One thing if you try too soon it will let you know to hold off so even if that number was 2 minutes, it is still 2 minutes too long in the case where you are waiting for your password recovery or something like that... so the hard forward wins... and in my case, with the fact that because it was in that mode, it really didn't matter if I ever remembered that old email password..
So the next question should be, what are the negatives to this method? The main negative would be that you really only have one email address.. so, if you forgot your gmail account password for example, and one of the methods of retrieving it was to email to your other email address... guess what, you aren't going to get it because it is now being forwarded directly to your gmail account which you can't remember.. so in order to get this to work, you would first have to turn off the hard forward and then go through this recovery process.. so again, there is a way around it and so until you have to why not leave it hard forwarding? I think by this process of elimination is how I quite often will deduce which method is best.
There will always be the argument or pros for doing it the other way, but off hand I can't really think of any other reason why you would need to have the mail first be plopped in to your other account where it could run in to further issues such as if you have the spam filter turned on it may end up in there as well, so you would also have to possibly check there for any lost mail. It would seem keeping it 'simple' is still the best solution here!

Bing Bar BS!

Well it seems one must now turn off the automatic updating within Windows 7, just as I had always suggested this in XP and then Vista. Now that Microsoft has found the "Bing Bar" as being considered a "critical update".. the problem is, it isn't a critical update if the program has not been installed but because it was pushed out with other windows updates, now that there are security issues and now a patch available, it becomes a critical update. Do yourself a favour and not only uninstall the Bing Bar if you haven't done so already, but also turn off the automatic updating of windows. Set it to notify but do not download. That way you can see just what is going to be installed if you go ahead with the various windows updates.

Education on using the Correct Web Browser

A recent email I sent to a client with a very old computer running Windows XP (which had been upgraded from windows 98?..

....You probably noticed, as you were

currently using it, the reinstalled Avant Browser.. thank you first of

all for not going and opening the internet explorer browser which had

been removed and will be reinstalled with the correct version for your

computer. The simple fact is, Google Chrome browser is by far, the

only browser to be using from now on, until some other browser even

comes close to it's power. Not to mention the safety/security of using

it and the fact that it automatically is always up to date. This is

one of the biggest complaints I do have with the Avant browser, is not

only because it does a very good job of emulating the Internet

Explorer but it also is suseptible of the security problems that the

internet explorer has but is fixed by updates. Although later builds

of the avant browser now have the ability to notify you of when an

update is available but that too can be disabled and is normally what

happens...The reason I do keep the Avant browser installed is because

it emulates the internet explorer exactly but is more safe and will

not automatically launch all the malware/spyware applications that

will launch when you run the internet explorer, but also with windows

XP operating system, it can be used to safely install the windows

updates without the need to launch the internet explorer. The thing

is, the Google Chrome browser is the 'default' browser which should be

all you ever use. For about that last two months I have not once

witnessed the need to even launch the avant browser because every

website I have come across (as I ask my clients to simply send to me,

any url that doesn't open correctly and suggest to copy/paste that in

to avant browser address bar and try it there). for a while this was

the way to fix any website that didn't open or look right within

chrome, but this has not been an issue for at least 2 months now.. the

big thing people mention or 'complain' about is the fact that they are

so used to using the computer one certain way and then I come along

and say to use it a different way.. fact is I see just how many issues

are caused when the wrong programs are being used, not to mention the

inefficiencies since chrome opens a website so much faster and this

becomes a big problem on the older (slower) computers....

As you can see, I am still dealing with many computers under my own umbrella and it all starts with simple education of why using the right tool for the job makes it so much easier and this goes for something that is as simple as surfing the web!

What I want for Christmas...

What I want for Christmas is:

-World Peace, but I'm pretty sure that will not happen as there is always someone pissed off at someone else unfortunately.

So keeping it closer to home, what I would like for Christmas is:

-My clients to think of contacting me first, BEFORE they attempt to perform those updates and/or other installation that they are unsure of, or if they are thinking of buying a new piece of technology, whether it be a computer or phone or remote control.. contact me BEFORE spending any money. As a result of contacting me, I am going to not only give you my opinion but hopefully a number of options on where to get the best deal on whatever it is you are in the market for! This will hopefully prevent you from contacting me after the fact, all frustrated because you can't get the stupid thing to work correctly or wonder why it doesn't seem to install the way the sales person said it would. (this is a common problem when buying a new printer lately)

-My clients to stop using the Avant Browser as their main web browser. Yes I know I am the one that pointed you in the direction of using it many years ago but that is my point here.. it is no longer the browser of choice. That would go to Google's Chrome browser. Why? For many reasons, but the main one is for the speed, security and the fact that it updates itself. Since this is the program you use to surf the web, it is important for the browser to always be up to date and that is by far the main reason why you shouldn't be using any other browser. The fact is the Avant browser emulates the Internet Explorer web browser which has been garbage pretty much after IE6.0 which was the last "good" release of that browser. But the web has changed a lot since then and now the only reason I do keep the Avant browser installed on my client computers is because it does emulate the internet explorer and therefore will be used on the odd occasion some other program on your computer calls for the Internet Explorer, as well as being the secondary browser in the odd scenario that Chrome doesn't appear to work for the website. This can happen if you visit a website that has not updated the code to work correctly with anything but the internet explorer (but this is something I have not had the need to worry about for over 2 months now so really don't see any need for you to be using it at all)

-My clients to stop worrying about the maintenance and simply using their device, leaving the technical updates and cleaning to me.-My clients to remember I am a key click away, so long as you are connected to the internet and if you need to contact me via telephone, to utilize my toll free number or text!

I think most of all, I want all that read my blog posts to have the best possible time you can at this 'festive' time of year, wishing you nothing but the best of health and happiness to you!

'tis the season for scams-be aware!

It seems the Telephone Scam I had reported on before has returned, as reported by a number of clients recently. Please be certain, nobody from Microsoft is going to phone you and tell you that your computer is at risk. The best thing you can do is hang up on them!
It is also the time of year when numerous "electronic greeting cards" arrive in your inbox. You should always be cautious of any attachment and/or web link that sends you to a sketchy website. If you are uncertain about an email, simply delete it and then compose a new message to the person you received it from, asking them if they did in fact send something to you. They can always re-send it. Better to be safe then sorry!

Tether App is Awesome!

It only took a few years but it now appears I have found the app of all apps without the need to jailbreak my Apple devices. I have wanted to take advantage of my Ipad's 3G connection for my laptop but was unable to do so because all the devices seem to be for iphone or tethering from the laptop device in the wrong direction. Along comes the Tether App, mind you it doesn't come cheap, at $15 it is well worth it. Now it will be interesting to see just how long it stays in the App Store before Apple pulls it I guess.
What is great about this app is that it simply proxies the connection and so it doesn't matter if I use a wifi or 3G connection, it just works and I managed to get a healthy enough download and upload to be able to use both devices simultaneously as well!

My last post, just yesterday, has already had a number of you contacting me saying "I see it on my computer but don't know how to use it"... a little shocked to hear this I must say, since most people would at least click on it and recognize the obvious address bar at the top but because the page is parked on 'visit the chrome web store' the first time you open it (possibly something they could change), it should mean you can't do some of your own exploring by clicking on the various elements within the browser. I am including this link to the 'getting started guide' for chrome since I like to direct you to the correct places but not make this blog a learning channel since there are so many levels of computers users I would rather not bore those that already know this stuff, nor do I wish for those that do not to stop reading my posts!

Nothing but Chrome

As I posted back in June with regards to using Chrome as your main/default web browser, it is now even more critical that this be the case. Although I still suggest having an IE alternative web browser on board and if you know me, that would be the Avant Browser, it is pretty much only for those very odd occasions where you stumble across a website that gives you nothing but error messages, stating you need to update your java or you can't open the pdf file without first installing the adobe reader. All of which is not true when using the Chrome web browser as it comes with a built in (native pdf reader) as well as its own control on how java is to be used. You should be getting a pop down message stating this website requires the use of java and "do you want to run it this time or all the time" type message. But regardless, having an alternative browser, in this case, the Avant Browser at your fingertips when you get such a message, being able to confirm the site is in fact working, becomes quite useful. In most cases, the website is either old and doesn't recognize the Chrome code or it is simply broken and expects the use of the Internet Explorer and so having the Avant Browser installed makes sense. Some will say, "why not just use the Internet Explorer since it is already installed?" and my response would be, "sure, if you are referring to IE 9, but then that would most likely not already be installed since it (Windows 7) does not (yet) ship with IE9 installed and you are either using IE8 (which sucks) or IE7 which was "ok" at best. If you are still using IE6 then you are in dire need of updating and in most cases you are also probably using running Windows XP and so you are looking at upgrading to a new computer I should think!
The simple fact is Chrome is awesome. Not only does it automatically update the moment you open the browser while connected to the internet, but it is constantly improving with available extensions (add-ons also known as plug-in). With everything on the computer now pretty much web-related, Chrome just makes sense. It is still the only browser with top of the line security that hackers shy away from because they too seem to recognize a good product when they see it!
I write this post mainly because as of late, many people are questioning me to error messages they are receiving such as Java and Adobe and when I ask what browser they are using, even though I know they have Chrome installed, they are (still) using the Avant Browser. I think the biggest problem with any browser that is not auto-updating is that simple fact.. that it is forever going to need to be updated and when it isn't, you get error messages. So do yourself a favour. If you aren't using Chrome yet, start using it and if you are using Chrome but not all the time, then simply delete the other browser icons from your desktop so that you don't accidentally click on it the next time you go web surfing.

Forget about Shaw Secure

It seems that Shaw is once again on the prowl to get people to sign up to their Shaw Secure plan which recently went through some changes in security. As I posted back in 2006, nothing has changed and no, you DO NOT want this service. All it does is give you a false sense of security since you are on their network you should already have your own antivirus software installed and moving to their 'secure' network only means you are leaving it up to their servers to confirm your computer's security but what about when you unplug from the internet and plug in your friends USB flash drive that is riddled with viruses? Your computer doesn't have any security since you have uninstalled it in order to use the Shaw Secure system. Do yourself a favour and treat this latest email from Shaw as nothing more then another SPAM message and you can go a step further by logging in to your account and disabling further marketing messages.

How to save $$ when booking travel

The first thing you need to do when looking for good deals is find a good website such as Kayak, faregeek or farecompare (there are many others but these are the two I choose when wanting a quick flight schedule with a list of available flights from various airlines) which will give you a list of flight options. Once you get this list, in most cases, you will find connecting flights as not all flights have the luxury of being non-stop and if they are they are typically more money anyway. So when you see the flights with more then one stop, go to that airline website and do a flight search only this time enter it as a multi-city flight entering the starting city along with the first stop arrival city and make the next flight the first arrival city and finally the destination city all on the same day. Typically you will find yourself saving at least $50 on the entire flight!

You have to love technology. Well you know I do! When it comes to watching television, I simply can't do it, well that is, LIVE television since the commercials just kill me. Not to mention not having the ability to pause the live TV unless you have some sort of cable box/direct TV set up. Fact is, with my last move which was over a year ago now, I have simply never bothered to sign up for Cable Television but that doesn't stop me from taking advantage of the great NHL Center ICE option. This is the first year I have signed up for the full season and so far it has been truly an awesome experience since the view options allow you to watch multiple games (up to 4) at one time. You can watch from the beginning so if you tune in late you have no worries. Plus you can do the pause, rewind of a live broadcast as well, returning to the live game after watching the replays at your own pace. Finally and what I think is probably the best option is being able to choose between 'home and away' broadcasts which is a key to any Canadian that simply can't deal with (some of) the brutal commentary that comes with the American teams. As much as I love the idea of anything free on the internet, that will help me be productive, I am having a little trouble wrapping my arms around this free 50gb deal that Box.net currently has on. Yes of course I signed up for it, but the moment I went to transfer a file, I quickly was stopped by the fact it was over 100mb in size. So I am back to dropping in the dropbox. No problem since I always have that available to me on on my devices. Not to mention Carbonite which is always backing my data up and is always available through the remote capabilities and the mobile app support. Now don't get me wrong, having the ability to quickly and easily upload and access files from any device is incredibly important these days, but Google has allowed me to do this for some time with their Google Docs and the integration of Picasa photo storage and Gmail that I have already upgraded to the 80GB per year plan, it seems Box is simply providing yet another great option so be sure to get yours today if you use a mobile device its 50gb free!

Everyone that uses the internet has some sort of email account but if you don't have a Gmail account I would ask why not? At this point in time, when everyone is mobile and wants to have the ability to check their mail wherever they are, not to mention, from multiple devices and most of all, to be safe and secure with the best SPAM protection, you should be using GMAIL.
By now, if you have read other blog posts from me, you would know how important I see the Google Chrome web browser as THE BROWSER to be using so it should come as no surprise that I am also going to promote the use of GMAIL. With the ability to utilize in IMAP and to be able to continue using Outlook, should you choose to want to (although personally I believe the browser based gmail is still the best since you can take advantage of the GOOGLE LABS features.
If you have already set up your email account through your internet provider, then you should know with Googles GMAIL you can have it automatically retrieve that account as well as any other account you have, allowing you to only have to open one email program to retrieve everything.
If you are using the Chrome browser and don't already have a google account then you are losing out on the ability to sync things.I suggest using the beta version of Chrome, simply because it is going to give you all the latest and upcoming features, but note if you have issues with this, to simply uninstall and go with the stable version.
So if you answer yes to any one of the following, then what are you waiting for, go and sign up for a GMail account which will automatically gets you that all important Google Account.
Do you want a simple way to view/check your email?
Do you want to be able to check your mail on more then one computer/device such as your desktop and laptop, or home computer and your phone?
Do you want to have an email account that is yours for the rest of your life, no matter what internet provider you use (think about it, if you ever move to a different internet provider your current email account will be history)
Do you want to continue to use outlook but also when you are using your laptop while on holidays?
Are you tired of wondering if the mail you have just received is legitimate or junk?
So what are you waiting for? Get your gmail account now! Then, if you are already a client of mine, contact me and I can get things set up for you to be able to utilize all the great features including the extensions and lab items.

Reeder still the best New Reader for me

Reeder, as I am quickly learning, is the best News Reader for me, as today I initially went to view it on my MacBook Pro when I remembered they are out of Beta and now in the apps store, for a price of $9.99!
I then quickly found myself reaching for my ipad to use the Reeder app, as I had "already paid for it" but that was using a different operating system and was on my ipad, but then I remembered I loved the app so much that I did Pay for the full/pro version on the Ipad so why was I halting my decision to pay ten bucks for an app that I really like already on one device? But then I thought how using it on my ipad had a different, and argueably a better reading experience.
Looking at this from the creator(s), they are entitled in making a living and who am I to argue with this? Fact is, what can be considered a fair price to place on any product. When you look at the success of Angry Birds (and the fact that you can play for free on Chrome browsers now), it seems there is a market for apps created initially for iphone/ipad to the browser/windows based computers.
I have since installed the $10 app on my macbook and truly do love the fact that they have now made it pretty much identical to the ipad version as in earlier builds this was apparently not the case..
With the amount of news I am constantly reading throughout the day, this is one app that is worth the price for me.

Steve Jobs-The Legend

There is no doubt Steve Jobs can now be considered as a legend in this day and age of computers and technology. Having the vision is one thing but to what he managed to do, to move technology to the next level on each and every product that was produced was simply outstanding. The world has truly lost a key component to future technology.

With the most recent release of the IPhone 4S there will be many early adopters flocking to get their hands on one, only to find themselves pissed off when the IPhone 5 is released, quite possibly before Christmas, but regardless if it weren't for these early adopters, the tech would simply not be thrust forward as quickly as it currently is. The unfortunate problem with new tech, especially with items like the IPhone and IPad that require communication plans through the wireless provider who demand you lock in to a multi-year contract is what hinders on the ability of tech to be constantly new. The best thing we as consumers can do is embrace the tech to its fullest by buying the products outright and not settling for any contract.

Macbook Air or not?

It's been almost exactly 2 years since my last major Apple purchase of a macbook pro and although it would seem the logical purchase answer would be the new Macbook Air, I am a bit skeptical in this as I have found the Ipad to be a more practical solution (so far), and I know this is not what most people will agree on, but for my type of work, whereas I spend many hours connected remotely to various client computers, it seems the logmein ignition app gets the nod most of the time, if using the ipad. Whereas if I am using my macbook or macbook pro, I am either using a simple saffari browser connection or utilizing the parallels software and using the logmein ignition program through my windows 7 parallels connection. So the purchase of a macbook air, as much as I would love to have one, it just seems more practical at this point in time, that I continue with the ipad solution. Of course using the ipad along with the bluetooth keyboard makes it essentially like any other laptop, not to mention incredible battery life so as much as I may be a likely candidate for the air, I think it may be a little longer before I go that route. True, my 4 hour + macbook pro battery is now down to about 2 hours + but that seems to be enough.. and since I did purchase an additional battery for my macbook (it is the last model before the uni-frame and sealed battery), I am getting about 10 hours of power with my macbook so I'm really not starving for the portability at this point...

CWmike writes "Machines running the decade-old Windows XP make up a huge reservoir of infected PCs that can spread malware to other systems, a Czech antivirus company said. Windows XP computers are infected with rootkits out of proportion to the operating system's market share, according to data released Thursday by Avast Software, which surveyed more than 600,000 Windows PCs. While XP now accounts for about 58% of all Windows systems in use, 74% of the rootkit infections found by Avast were on XP machines. Avast attributed the infection disparity between XP and Windows 7 to a pair of factors: The widespread use of pirated copies of the former and the latter's better security. Vlcek assumed that many of the people running XP SP2, which Microsoft stopped supporting with security patches a year ago, have declined to update to the still-supported SP3 because they are running counterfeits."
