Ipad Charging Issues

Ok so I am aware of the larger battery in the new Ipad and recognize it may take longer to charge but I have now come across a few issues where, using the original Ipad charger seems to charge up to about 88%, without even using it and when I checked it, it stated it wasn't charging. I unplugged and re-plugged the power cable and it started charging again. Since the device is not currently being used there should be no reason for it to not charge completely.  Just one more thing that makes me figure the existing power adapter simply isn't quite large enough for the new battery.

Tether for Mac software

Note to self: Don't upgrade if it is working fine!  I should have waited and reviewed before performing the upgrade to the latest tether software (version 2.0) for mac as I am using attempting to use the tether app that I was lucky enough to purchase back when it was available, last November 2011, for less than a week I believe.  In any case, having the Ipad 3G and now the Ipad 4G I figured I would give it a spin but found my MacPro seemed to continue to disconnect so I figured there might be an update, which there was.. but not knowing this new version was wireless based as well as HTML 5 based, which is great of course, it wasn't going to do me much good since it was the IOS tether app, which I believe is known as Itether, that I have installed on the Ipad/Iphone and performing the upgrade of the Mac software made this null and void.. fortunately there were websites that had cached the software and I was able to reinstall the older (version 1.0) back to the original and viola, everything is working.  I am not getting much over 1mbps but for what I am currently working on that will suit me just fine.

The New Ipad and your kids next computer

I just recently read an article about the iPad and whether or not it is just too expensive to be giving to your child. In my opinion, especially if you go the 4G route, you are not only providing your child with a full fledged computer, but also a cell phone which is quite handy for emergencies, not to mention it has a capacity limit for data so you can pretty much guarantee they will not be over spending.. that is, so long as you keep control of the apps they may be purchasing. Of course the actual age limit would depend on just how technically apt your child may be at an early age.
From my own experience with my once-3 year old niece who was constantly sticking paper clips in to her Mom's floppy drive, because she didn't know any better.. until I bought her a 101 Dalmatians game for her to play on the computer.. within a few weeks she was flying around on that thing and didn't think about sticking paper clips in to that slot any more.
Kids are constantly texting and there are many great text free apps for the iPad as well as voice/text apps like Viber and of course Skype not to mention the FaceTime which is built in to the iPad. Add a $60 Apple Bluetooth keyboard and they have a full on computer!

Remote Computer Repairs (Rant)

For starters, I should make mention that this is not only an informative report on remote computer work but also a bit of a rant on just what sorts of problems I am faced with while performing remote service work:

Over the years computer technology has truly become much more user friendly and with the added advantage of faster internet speeds it makes the ability to connect to a computer remotely that much easier. For me it is all about preventative maintenance and so the ability to connect and repair/update a computer BEFORE it becomes a 'bench case' is essential. Nobody wants to have their computer ripped from their home and out of commission for days at a time. The computer has become such an integral part of our lives.  Fortunately in many homes there is more than one and/or the ability to use your smart phone to at least stay in touch and be able to check your email.

The ability to use a secondary device while your computer is being worked on is key for me. Since there are times when registry and/or virus scans are being done or your system is simply being optimized after being cleaned whereas you should not be using it but because it is in your home it seems almost impossible to stay off of it.. ok that is fine but why must you go and reinstall the crap that was just removed?!   Actually in the past week I have run in to people having printer problems (thanks to the crappy HP software/drivers in both incidents) but for whatever reason, after removing and cleaning off everything, they went ahead and reinstalled the software without my consent, even though they knew I was working on the problem, causing nothing but frustration for me as it was like taking two steps backwards, or the loss of a few hours of my life while I sit and watch the HP uninstaller reboot the computer a number of times just to get what should be, a very small printer/scanner driver, but unfortunately HP makes it in to a 650mb software bundle complete with spyware and adware (hp update, community support, supply watch). Only to have to perform this a second time... since you were already having printer troubles, going ahead and reinstalling the device software is not always the solution to the problem, especially if you already have someone looking in to the problem.. and the problem here is the fact that the computer is still in your home and there to use... this is why, in some instances, I have had to make it quite clear, that even though the computer is there, PLEASE DO NOT USE IT UNTIL YOU HEAR BACK FROM ME and to treat this as a computer that has been pulled from your home and is now sitting on my work bench.. no matter how much you want to check your email or quickly check Facebook! What's wrong with these people, do they not want their computers fixed?

Ipad3 (The Ipad) Initial Review

Not to be outdone by other geeks getting the new Ipad on the first day it became available, mine arrived at my door just before Noon and it had 72% battery life upon initial power up. I have it plugged in now but this is near the end of my day as I took it with me on the road about an hour after the initial unboxing so it was down to 23% by the time I got home. Sure the battery is bigger and sure it will take longer to charge, but that shouldn't be a problem as I typically plug it in before bed anyway and since you can get close to, if not, 12 hours out of it (I'm more like about 10 since I use bluetooth for all my devices).. by the way I picked up the 4G-16gb version as my original Ipad 1 and 2 were also the 3G models. In my opinion, that extra $100 is well spent since I have the flexibility to be online any place there is cellular service.
Some of the reviews I have read are stating they have not noticed much of an improvement in speed and I can only figure this must be the apps they were using because I would have to say it's pretty close to twice as fast as my Ipad2 when it comes to using a program like "logmein ignition" which I use on a daily basis. I was also able to utilize the LTE in Houston but only managed to see speeds of 12mbps both up and down, unlike some people who have stated speeds as high as 40mbps although I don't believe that was in the Houston area. In any case it is pretty equivalent to a typical wifi speed now so that is nice to see.
The screen is most definitely a lot sharper and easy on the eyes to look at, not sure about the color temperature being 'warmer' as some have suggested.. All I can say is that it produces a nice quality image.
The size being a little thicker, I was wondering if I would be able to use my Ipad2 Joby GorillaMobile Yogi stand which has the spider legs but was pleasantly surprised when it did fit. Noting the rear camera lens is a little larger but the cut-out on the stand was just the right size, making it actually a little larger than necessary on the Ipad2. Also note that I was initially using my Ipad1 Joby GorillaMobile Yogi stand for my Ipad2 until I could find the version 2 and it worked although not as snug as it should be, as well as the camera lens was blocked by no cut-out for the lens that doesn't exist for version1. I imagine version 3 stand will be out soon and will account for the thickness if nothing else. But I digress since this is a review about the Ipad itself and not the accessories.
So should you get one? In my opinion yes, absolutely.. you most certainly will not be disappointed but you may also be quite happy with the Ipad2 if you can get a good deal for one and if it is going to be your first ipad. I think it is important however, to decide what is important for you. Some people are going for the 32GB or even 64GB models but are wifi only.. I believe the 3G or in the Ipad3 case being 4G/LTE is more worthy of the additional money before spending it on a unit with twice the storage space. I really don't have a problem putting 8-10gb of Music/podcasts on my unit with the remainder filled up with apps, etc and having to sync it if I want to change out the data that much and feel this is really not a big deal. Those that complain there is no external storage card slot (still), I truly don't see this as ever being a problem for Apple. Since you can utilize the memory card adapter for importing your photos and utilizing bluetooth for all other connectivity issues, what should be more important here is the device itself and just how much you will use it and how much you won't be using your other computers. For me, I find myself picking up one of my three Ipads just as some would pick up a pen or pencil to write a note. The device itself becomes a tool and depending on what apps you find yourself using, I do believe you will be quite satisfied with whichever model you end up deciding on. I have friends now wanting me to sell my first gen device but even that is something I really am not ready to depart with, since it still gets a lot of use around the house, albeit not on 3G so I guess I should consider selling it if for no other reason then to be able to afford a new wifi model to replace it.
The question now is,"does this replace the desktop computer?" my answer would be a firm "no" because I believe there will always be the time when you want to sit at a desk and big screen and click away with your mouse...

Ipad excitement grows as shipment nears

Ok so as expected, since tomorrow is supposed to be the delivery reception day, there has been movement on my shipment. I really think they should make a new category for Apple shipments however, especially since it states 'next day delivery' when 4 days has lapsed.

Ipad Excitement-Shipping Mystery

Ok so like many that ordered on the initial announcement day, I have received notice of shipment. But what I don't get is how Fedex can state "standard overnight shipping" but when it was picked up just after 9am Monday, why is it not due to arrive until the 16th? That certainly is not overnight. Apple/Fedex certainly do know how to tease!
