You need a web email, just not Windows Live

RIP Windows Live--sorry I never used you! (not really)  Based on this Business Insider story, it appears Microsoft is once again changing their branding.  The thing is, it is extremely important to have a web based email account. In fact this is what you should be using as your main email in my opinion, but most certainly not Windows Live/Hotmail.... You simply can't beat the spam protection and security of Gmail.  Whether you are a lover or hater of Google, the simple truth is, the options of porting other email account to Gmail to take advantage of the spam filtering alone is worth while but then add the fact that you have IMAP servers at your discretion. There is simply no comparing this to the others that are currently available. If for no other reason, you should be using Chrome as your main web browser and to take full advantage of the services within Chrome, you are going to need a Google Account so what are you waiting for?
