Fix Chrome Error Message: “Your profile can not be used because it is from a newer version of Google Chrome”

I have recently been inundated with a Chrome installation error which, thanks to a quick Google Search resulted in this post that quite quickly and easily solves the problem.

[UPDATE]
This appears to be only happening on Windows Vista Machines for me so far.

Google+ should you join?-Update on security

Little did you know, if you have a Google account, whether it be with a gmail address account or you have signed up using another email address. Odds are, you already have some sort of profile, which may or may not be public.

You may want to check on this and set the security settings accordingly.

Although I do own a Facebook account, I have kept it to my friends and family. Not that I don't see my clients as friends, but found Google+ to be the perfect place to en'circle' my clients utilizing the Google+ circles.

Many are worried about Google's new security policy which takes place March 2012. You can read it all here.

Personally, it is nice to see a company at least being transparent enough to know where you need to go to change and setup your security, unlike Facebook!  What web browser are you using? Are you really aware of all the cookies being collected? Of course not, so being educated more shouldn't make you decide to stop using their service, especially when Google has such a huge stake in the Internet as we currently know it.

Spam hasn't gone anywhere

I have recently been questioned by numerous clients that are getting more than normal spam messages sent to them and wondering what to do... in all of these cases they were gmail clients so I have had to say nothing more than to click on the SPAM icon and it is no longer a problem.  But there is no question that spam is on the rise as of late, since I too have noticed my normal 5-10 messages per day in my spam box has grown to twice that size.. no worries, as in all instances they were spam but you should be aware of the fact that spammers are always going to take advantage of world news and events.. if something like Whitney Houston passing isn't enough to fill the spam box, then the rise in gas prices can do just the same.  Just be smart. If you figure it is spam, it probably is.  Your friends and family are smart enough these days to mark the subject line appropriately.  If you haven't already run through the obvious anti-malware programs such as CCLEANER, Adaware, SpywareBlaster and Spybot Search and Destroy then what are you waiting for? Go here to get those and get the tips on this here.

Another annoying Samsung Note review

I am really getting sick and tired of these extremely poor reviews that start by saying things like it is so good but in the end are stating it is no good. I have gone from an iPhone 3GS to this Samsung Note, buying it site-un-seen due to all the reviews from the Galaxy SII. Since this had not only a larger screen but faster processor, it just made sense. For me, the iPhone was simply too small since I found myself ALWAYS reaching for either one of my iPad to truly use whatever app I was looking for. I spend a lot of time reading news (RSS) feeds so REEDER for the iPad is still my favorite with FEEDLY being a close second. Now, with this Samsung Galaxy Note I can actually enjoy FEEDLY or even the Google reader. This Note smokes the iPhone in speed and as they all make mention of the Samsung touchwiz being so bloated, it didn't take me long to root the phone and find all the right apps to keep the system and battery life optimized. JUICE DEFENDER (ultimate-well worth paying for this upgrade as it gives you complete configuration once rooted). As for the battery life, although I might get over 8 hours of normal use, I am nowhere near normal when using this device but because you can pop the back off of it and toss a new battery in...(I picked up 3 replacement batteries with a charger for $18 through amazon) so I can quite easily go 24 hours without the need to plug in.

As for the size of this thing, yeah it is big but that is why I bought it. I have small chubby Man fingers but don't find it difficult to walk, read and scroll using one hand. When it comes to using the camera..seriously? How can you possibly have troubles with this? Look around at what others are doing when they use their smartphones whether it be an iPhone, android or blackberry, 90 % are using two hands because they are busy texting something. As I still own my old iPhone as well as an iPod touch, I find myself laughing when I pick it up..it's like a toy now..so small!

Finally, when making a call, the ear speaker at my ear and the microphone actually at my mouth, this is no different than using a normal phone on your desk or how things were with those original white motorola phones, but with the thickness less than an iPhone and half the weight...yes I loved the iPhone and the technology, but come on, this Samsung Galaxy Note is by far the best thing to come along..to date.

Pop Under Advertising

It seems the latest trend for annoying users of the web browser is to create pop-under ads which are typically launched with a simple mouse roll over. You no longer have to click on the ad to launch them and what is even worse is the ad typically pops up under the current window you have open. You may not even know about it unless the ad contains audio, which they usually do. As a recent client contacted me in a panic, thinking someone had connected to her computer since she heard someone speaking, and immediately shut things down figuring by pulling the plug would prevent this.
So, with a little knowledge of just what is going on and recognizing that it is quite a common thing to have multiple windows and/or tabs opening on any given web browser (Chrome being my choice as the one to use and highly recommend it as well), just dont forget to minimize the current window to see just what may be happening in the background.  You can also RIGHT CLICK on the current tab you have open and choose to close all other tabs. If a new browser window opened and you are using Windows 7 then you should also be able to move your mouse over the program icon on the task tray to see the other windows that are running and choose to close them by clicking on the red X.

Wireless Administration

I know I have posted a few times about Wireless Printers and the costs of maintaining such devices but what I  am finding more often is the fact that wireless security is simply being overlooked.  Because you now own that wireless printer you are going to need to know your SSID and password for your wireless router but what is more important is having access to the administration of that router.  Since you purchased it, plugged it in and probably ran through the step by step 'easy setup', one thing that is quite often overlooked is the creation of the administration password to make changes to the router itself.  If you are like many clients of mine that are upgrading their internet to the latest and greatest 'high speed internet' which provides you with their own wireless router, this initial setup process may be done by the internet provider installer.  What is happening as I see it, is they are setting things up then providing the SSID and password to access that wireless identifier however what is not being provided is the administrator password, in which case it is either not set up at all, or has been set up as a default password that THEY are familiar with but you are not.. this is fine if you are planning on having a service tech come back to your home to make any changes and the only way around this is to reset the router at which time all of your settings are lost. This means unless you set it up again using the same SSID and password, you will have to reconfigure each device that connects to the wireless router such as your printer. If you have ever tried setting up some of these wireless printers from the small control panel on the printer itself, you will know it is NOT a lot of fun!   Therefore, before your internet provider technician leaves, be sure you have ALL THE PASSWORDS AND USERNAMES, not just what they initially give you and write it down so that when you do have issues and have some other tech helping you out, they will not have to first be resetting things and starting from scratch.. it will save a lot of time and leave your tech a few less grey hairs!

IPads and upgrading them

With this recent Techcrunch post "I’m Already Bored With The iPad 3", I thought I should give me opinion of this, since I am NOT bored with the Ipad3!

Of course with any new product there will be rumours as to what it will actually have for specs but all this does is promote the obvious which will be, many of the next generation Ipads will sell and sell fast!

I own the original Ipad as well as the Ipad2, both are the 3G version because that was, by far, the greatest feature in my opinion. Just having the ability to connect anywhere there is cell service, not having to be within a wifi hotspot truly makes the device mobile. Considering it is about $100 more, it is well worth it. Of course that means you need to subscribe to a monthly service plan but there is no long term contract so you don't have to purchase a 3G plan for the month or more, if you know you will not be travelling, but knowing it is there, I believe is a big deal.

I never missed the camera that wasn't part of the original Ipad as I don't believe I have really made many video calls the required this, nor have I really used the camera for taking pictures, but again, it is nice to have it there, especially for some of the newer apps that are taking advantage of the camera/gps for location type services.

External/SD card memory.. don't miss that either.. having the ability to network to some other computer is just fine, not to mention dropbox, the cloud, box, etc... yes, I have purchased the SD card adapter but that was so I could upload my pictures from my camera, which I believe I have actually used twice so this too is something optional and is merely a tool that you can choose to buy if you are in to this sort of thing.

The speed difference between Ipad 1 and 2 is noticeable with certain apps but not that much really, but then again, my Ipad 1 is now used for the less memory intensive items while I do those things from my Ipad2.

Will I be getting an Ipad3? Yes, absolutely, and it will be the 3G version, or should I say LTE version as it is most likely going to have that if nothing else (quad core is skeptical in my opinion and I believe we won't see this until the Iphone 5 is released probably on or near the end of November 2012)

Do I really need 3 Ipads?  No, but then again, for each Ipad I have, that is less time spent on any other computer I may be using and that includes any laptop since I utilize the Apple Bluetooth keyboard with whichever Ipad I am using as the portable typing device.

It truly boils down to what you plan to use the device for. Initially if it becomes the bathroom reading device, so be it. You won't be disappointed with whichever version you end up with, and knowing they are already starting to drop the prices on Ipad2 in anticipation of #3, you may want to settle on that, especially if it is your first Ipad you will own.

Set Gmail a your browser default email

Chrome continues to be more speedy..

If you are still not using Chrome as your main/default browser, then what the heck are you waiting for?

Today it seems everyone is complaining their computer is not fast enough when in fact it is more likely the web browser you are using (and the probable malware/spyware that needs cleaning out but that is another subject all together).  When you are doing web research/surfing, the last thing you want is a slow browser and Google Chrome continues to lead the way in speed.

They have now released an even faster version so what are you waiting for, more security? They have managed to work this in as well!

[Rant] Going in circles? Sometimes I do feel that way!

On any given day, I will spend it consulting about technical issues, attempting to make your day a little easier by explaining how to do things a certain way, using the right tool for the right job. Whether that be with a specific software program or the right piece of tech hardware, there is really nothing quite as frustrating for me when I have spent the time initially only to find myself spending more time later on FIXING the problem. This was due to the fact that whatever I had initially explained as what I thought was the correct approach to handling the problem, was not the path chosen and the direct result was failure. For me, this isn't even the most frustrating part about it, since I had most likely already witnessed or experienced this type of failure first hand and was merely trying to avoid it happening again. But because this person choose to completely ignore my recommendations AND THEN proceed to blame me for the failure!
I am certainly not staying that it should ever be 'my way or the highway', but if you are asking for my professional opinion about something and then you decide to go a different route, why would you them wish to press my buttons by blaming me for your failure?  It is this sort if thing that truly makes one want to reevaluate how to spend each 24 hours of each day!
