I find myself writing yet another post on the networking aspects of your computer and printer. You can read my previous posts here.
It seems everyone is out buying a new printer and because it is a 'wireless printer' they are wanting to take advantage of these features. That is all fine and good but the truth is, you are only going to be creating more potential technical problems, especially if you really don't require the printer to be 'wireless'. Take a look at your needs BEFORE you go out and buy that printer. Buying a 'network' printer is one thing but 'wireless network' is another. If you don't have a wireless router for example, then there is no point in buying a wireless printer since you won't have the wireless connectivity. A 'network' printer means it has the ethernet connection for you to plug directly to your router. Since there is a good chance your printer is going to be sitting on the same table that the router is on this is by far your best way to plug that printer in. The only advantage of a wireless printer is that it can be placed in a closet, out of the way, but remember it still requires power so it is not completely 'wireless'!
When I mention the networked printer, I should also be mentioning the computer. The same should apply for the computer if it is also sitting on the same table as the router, take advantage of the wired connection. Technically this method is not only going to give you the fastest network speeds but also the most reliable. Just because your computer may have a wireless network doesn't mean you can't also plug in the wired connection.
