No Agenda Newsletter Show 1082 Halloween Edition The Holiday Season Begins Tomorrow

Halloween is probably the weirdest non-holiday celebration of the year surpassing the other crackpot days such as take your child to work day or Valentine’s Day.The history of Halloween is very sketchy with all sorts of contradictory origin stories. A good rundown is here. It is skewed in various ways around the world and has changed a lot in the USA with the rise of corn mazes, pumpkin patch festivals, costume parties and haunted houses. Actual door-to-door trick or treating is a localized phenomenon and often involves parents or older siblings accompanying the youngsters from door-to-door for safety reasons. The “trick” side of the equation is rare nowadays. In the past flaming bags of dog poop, egging a house or a house covered in toilet paper were not uncommon. Now it’s politically incorrect if not vandalism. Somehow wrong on many levels, yet oddly creative. So too with the costumes which have lost many clichés such as the cowboy or Indian costume which is politically incorrect because of cultural appropriation and the disappearance of the simple cap gun which is seen as promoting gun violence. Meanwhile, the sexualization of young girls seems OK as many dress up all made up in cat suits, devil costumes, sexy nurses or even as a Dominatrix. Luckily the simple Princess or Witch are still popular. You can assume that the Witch costume will disappear once a Wiccan coven decides to make a fuss. So Happy Halloween from the No Agenda Show.
