NO AGENDA is Your True Independent Media
Little Known History

The Holiday itself was supposed to be on July 2 (tomorrow's show!) when the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies actually took place. A great quote from John Adams in a letter to his wife, was interesting: “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival." Har.

Nowadays there is debate over why the dates were changed. Because everything (on the Declaration of Independence) was dated July 4th, July 4th became the day although real Independence Day was July 2. And to further complicate things there is no real evidence that everyone signed on July 4th. It is largely believed that many signed after the 4th when it may have been more convenient.

So our founding document became the model for back-dating agreements. This is an often used technique  to scam shareholders in large corporations regarding back-dating stock options. There is precedent!

The July 4th holiday, per se, began officially in 1870 and turned into a paid federal holiday in 1938 in the middle of the Great Depression. It is one of two holidays that traditionally use fireworks to celebrate, New Year's being the other.

Whatever the backstory it is an established holiday now associated with the beginning of summer, BBQ, family gatherings, and, in San Francisco at least, fog and chilly nights.

The No Agenda family including the round-table members, artists, contributors, and back office wish everyone an excellent 4th of July the whole world over.
