If you have windows 8 then you should already have installed windows 8.1 and if you haven't you should head right over to windows update (click on the start and type windows update and then click on the search result).. you should get all updates, not just the critical but any optionional.
Note for my existing clients, don't worry you are always being updated so you should do nothing.
The purpose of this post is more to let you know what all the noise is about, since this is nothing more than an update. The release is known as Windows 8.1 Update, because it is much like a 'service pack' which includes a number of patches and other updates but also includes graphical user interface changes as you can learn from this recent CNET post.
