Everyone that uses the internet has some sort of email account but if you don't have a Gmail account I would ask why not? At this point in time, when everyone is mobile and wants to have the ability to check their mail wherever they are, not to mention, from multiple devices and most of all, to be safe and secure with the best SPAM protection, you should be using GMAIL.
By now, if you have read other blog posts from me, you would know how important I see the Google Chrome web browser as THE BROWSER to be using so it should come as no surprise that I am also going to promote the use of GMAIL. With the ability to utilize in IMAP and to be able to continue using Outlook, should you choose to want to (although personally I believe the browser based gmail is still the best since you can take advantage of the GOOGLE LABS features.
If you have already set up your email account through your internet provider, then you should know with Googles GMAIL you can have it automatically retrieve that account as well as any other account you have, allowing you to only have to open one email program to retrieve everything.
If you are using the Chrome browser and don't already have a google account then you are losing out on the ability to sync things.I suggest using the beta version of Chrome, simply because it is going to give you all the latest and upcoming features, but note if you have issues with this, to simply uninstall and go with the stable version.
So if you answer yes to any one of the following, then what are you waiting for, go and sign up for a GMail account which will automatically gets you that all important Google Account.

Do you want to be able to check your mail on more then one computer/device such as your desktop and laptop, or home computer and your phone?
Do you want to have an email account that is yours for the rest of your life, no matter what internet provider you use (think about it, if you ever move to a different internet provider your current email account will be history)
Do you want to continue to use outlook but also when you are using your laptop while on holidays?
