Dear Producer,
Help the show finish off this short month with some support. Since last week the support in the PayPal account has fallen off the cliff for inexplicable reasons. So a contribution of any amount would be greatly appreciated. Please click here and help. You do not need a PayPal account either, just a credit card or even an e-check. Pop Money users make sure to use the email address of noagenda @ dvorak.org.

Anything you can afford is greatly appreciated. First time donors are welcome.

Also note that you’ll get full Hollywood type credit as an executive producer by clicking here.
famous Iwo Jima photo
Today is the anniversary of the famous Iwo Jima photo taken by AP War photographer Joe Rosenthal in 1945.

And it’s not as if he was just a lucky guy because other photogs were in the area. Below is a meta pic taken by Robert Campbell taking a pic of Rosenthal taking a pic of the soldiers. On the far left you can see another photographer, Bill Genaust who captured the flag raising on 16mm color movie film. Both Genaust and Campbell were official Marine Corps photographers. Genaust was killed in action.

Rosenthal never cashed in from the photo as it was technically owned by the Associated Press which is a classic example of poor protections offered by the copyright laws. He ended up finishing his career with the San Francisco Chronicle as a staff photographer. He died in 2006 in a Novato nursing home at 92.

The best rundown of the event is here which includes the Genaust film for viewing. It should always be understood that this was the second flag raised on Iwo Jima. The soldiers took down an already raised smaller flag to raise this bigger one. And while this was done for what was believed to be legitimate reasons, it was somewhat staged for the three photographers. The Rosenthal photo really dramatized the moment the best. The image was so iconic that it was made into a bronze statue for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
