The soldiers took down an already raised smaller flag to raise this bigger one. And while this was done for what was believed to be legitimate reasons, it was somewhat staged for the three photographers. The Rosenthal photo really dramatized the moment the best. The image was so iconic that it was made into a bronze statue for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. |
